The lymph system is the body’s extensive drainage network that keeps body fluid levels in balance; and defends the body against infections; and promotes the absorption of fat-soluble nutrients through digestion. It includes the tonsils, adenoids, thymus, spleen, bone marrow, lymph vessels, and lymph nodes.

The lymphatic system removes waste from the body by carrying it through a network of vessels and lymph nodes and then returning it to the bloodstream. The lymph vessels collect lymph fluid, which is made up of white blood cells and chyle (intestinal fluid that contains fats and proteins). The lymph fluid passes through lymph node clusters found in the neck, armpits, chest, abdomen, and groin. These small soft round structures act as filters that trap viruses, bacteria, cancer cells, and unwanted substances such as toxins. The lymph nodes contain immune cells that kill off harmful substances and abnormal cells. The lymph fluid then drains back into the bloodstream. It is the job of the liver and kidneys to remove waste from the blood, which is then eliminated from the body in urine and stool.

How can you support your body to flush toxins from your lymphatic system? A regular regimen of physical exercise and deep breathing keeps the lymphatic system pumping and detoxing the body of waste. Movement is required for muscles to push on the vessels to pump through the fluid. Moderate level physical activities such as walking, stretching, yoga, and Pilates done regularly can improve the state of lymph. To keep the lymphatic system strong and healthy, be sure the body is well hydrated, maintain a nutritious diet, exercise regularly, and avoid exposure to toxic chemicals in pesticides and cleaning products that can build up in your system and make it harder for the body to filter waste.

Fluid will build in the tissues and cause swelling if the lymphatic system isn’t working properly. The worst thing you can do for the lymphatic system is to not hydrate and to be sedentary. So, be sure to HYDRATE, BE ACTIVE, EAT CLEAN & LIVE CLEAN.
